Koehler illumination: The Koehler illumination got it's name from Professor August Köhler. ("Zeitschrift für wissenschaftliche Mikroskopie", Volume X, Page 433-440 (1893)) It is used in high quality microscopes for the even and bright illumination of a specimen in the area required, so that the illumination is not too strong. In addition, disturbing light reflections (e. g. from the tube's inner walls) are prevented to a large extent. Perfectly illuminated specimens are especially needed in the area of micro photography for quality purposes. Let us take a specimen (e. g. diatoms) and look at it without the Koehler illumination. You can see the image is very much out of focus and blurred. That is not a good basis for high quality observations. On the contrary! Microscopy is no fun at all like this and does not lead to good results. If the Koehler illumination is used, the difference to normal illumination becomes immediately apparent.
