Description
Southern Pacific #4100 AC-4 Cab Forward YOU BETTER BE READY WHEN YOU TAKE THE THROTTLE ON THIS MONSTER ! SHIPPING SEPTEMBER 2008 - ORDER NOW #6-11143 The Southern Pacific Railway ran rugged routes through the Sierra and Cascade mountain ranges that challenged the most powerful locomotives. Particularly treacherous was a 139-mile stretch extending from Roseville, California to Sparks, Nevada. Locomotives running on “The Hill” climbed and descended nearly 7,000 feet above sea level, moving orchard and ranch produce to the East. Numerous tunnels kept the line clear of heavy snow, but the tight confines deflected the noxious stack exhaust along the boiler into the cab, nearly asphyxiating train crews. In 1908, enterprising Southern Pacific designers solved the problem by turning the locomotive around so that the stack and its choking fumes were behind the cab. Preceded by several classes of smaller “cab–aheads”, the modern articulated consolidation—or AC class—debuted in 1928. Espee engineers collaborated with Baldwin designers to create this new type of locomotive, the 4-8-8-2 class AC-4—first of a number of AC-class articulateds that became synonymous with Southern Pacific. The #4100, first of twenty AC-4’s to be delivered, was 120’ long and weighed over 900,000 lbs. when loaded. Each was equipped with modern appliances, including a BL feedwater heater, a type E superheater, and a large Vanderbilt tender. The first engine to go to 235 lbs. of steam, the AC-4 could supply 116,900 lbs. of tractive effort.
