Basile the Cat Professional Marionnette Made in France Height: 40" This beautifully made puppet, a 15th century French fairy tale character, was made by a master marionnette maker.  Purchased in Atelier, France in 1990, it is approximately 25 years old and is fully functioning for professional use.  The body is made of wood (weight of about 20 lbs.) with an intricately carved & painted head (which turns freely on a carved peg below the neck) with green glass eyes.  His costume is absolutely exquisite!  The jacket and pantaloons are a umber velvet with panels of intricately woven tapestry fabric.  Chocolate brown satin ribbon trims the bottom of the jacket with bows at the bottoms of the pant legs.  The trim of the jacket is really elaborate with looped cord and over 50 multicolored pompoms in groups of three that decorate throughout the figure/some dotting the center of stiff thread-wrapped wire flowers.  There is purple seed-bead work around the painted black wooded "shoes".  The fabulous hat is burgundy velvet with black netting and a plume of 5 feathers.  The violin and bow are nicely detailed stained wood.  The mechanism that works the puppet is a wooden dowel with 4 wooden arms that can slide back & forth.  There are 11 points where it is connected with a sturdy cord of hemp fiber; two for the head, two at the shoulders one at the lower back, one on each hip, two for the hands and one at each knee.
