Description
Launched June 8, 1958, the Edmund Fitzgerald was the largest ship on the Great Lakes until 1971. Her great size of 729 feet and 13,632 gross tons won her that distinction for 13 years. Her final voyage began the afternoon of November 9, 1975. She was to transport a load of taconite pellets from Superior Wisconsin, to Zug Island, near Detroit, Michigan. Her Captain, Captain Ernest M. McSorley, had had her loaded and left the dock at 4:30 that day. The gale warnings that had been issued that evening were upgraded to storm warnings early in the morning of November 10. Later at 7:10 pm, the last communication was received from the Fitzgerald. Twenty-nine men were lost when the Edmond Fitzgerald sunk on that fateful day. To commemorate this great ship, a canadian carver spent many hours carving this wonderful wooden replica. The original owner told me that he had purchased ($4500) her from the artist (who was asking $8000) 30 years ago which would make that about 1978 or 1979. It measures approximately 93 inches long by 13 1/2 inches tall by 10 inches wide. The body is carved out of wood. The small parts, such as the railings, are plastic. Some of the parts are unglued, but are there. The rudder has been repaired and the blades are missing off the prop but one is there for a pattern. She weighs 67 pounds and shows great detail. Please see all the pics and if you have any questions please feel free to ask them. Or if you need more pics to show you something better, please just ask. We live in southwest lower Michigan on the shores of Lake Michigan just south of Muskegon and west of Grand Rapids. I will ship this through a professional shipper but have been quoted $250 to freight this to the lower 48. Or I may be able to meet the buyer somewhere as I am retired and do take occasional trips.
